Film stars Nicholas Hoult as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula
Universal Pictures will release “Renfield,” a monster movie centered around Dracula’s sidekick on April 14, 2023, the studio announced on Friday.
The film stars Nicholas Hoult (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “X-Men” franchise) as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula, who will be played by Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage.
The official synopsis is as follows: Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
Chris McKay (“The Tomorrow War,” “The Lego Batman Movie”) is directing and producing.
Ryan Ridley (Fox’s “Ghosted,” Cartoon Network’s “Rick & Morty”) wrote the script, based on an original story outline from “The Walking Dead” and “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman.
“Renfield” also stars Awkwafina (“The Farewell,” Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings”), Ben Schwartz (“Sonic,” “The Afterparty”) and Adrian Martinez (“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” “Focus”).
In Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula,” Renfield was a patient in an insane asylum who ate vermin to absorb their life force — and whom Count Dracula used to enter the asylum and attack Jonathan Harker’s school mistress fiancée Mina.

The film, based on Dracula’s henchman, also stars Nicolas Cage.
Universal has staked out a release date for Renfield, its monster movie starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage. The film will open April 14, 2023, the studio announced Friday.
The film will face some competition on its date. Last week, Sony moved the Adam Driver sci-fi film 65 back a year to April 14, 2023.
Hoult stars as the titular Reinfeld, a henchmen for Dracula (played by Cage). The film, which is said to be a modern story with a comedic bent, comes at a turning point for Reinfeld. After centuries of procuring Dracula’s prey and doing his bidding, Reinfeld is ready to move on, if he can only figure out how to end his codependency with his master.
Chris McKay, who recently helmed Amazon’s The Tomorrow War, is in the director’s chair. Rick and Morty‘s Ryan Ridley penned the script, based on an idea from The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman.
Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Adrian Martinez also star in Renfield, produced by Skybound Entertainment’s Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst, along with McKay. McKay’s producing partner Samantha Nisenboim will executive produce.
Renfield first appeared in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, where he was an asylum patient who believed drinking blood would make him immortal. He eventually pledges himself to Dracula, who gets him to do his bidding by dangling the prospect of immortality in front of him. [Source]

Less then a week after landing a starring role in Searchlight’s The Menu, Nicholas Hoult looks to have found another project to add to his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that Hoult is on board to star in Universal Pictures’ Renfield, a monster movie centered on Dracula’s familiar henchman. The Tomorrow War director Chris McKay is on board to helm the pic, which is based on an original story outline from Robert Kirkman. Ryan Ridley wrote the script.
McKay’s producing partner Samantha Nisenboim will be joining the project as executive producer. The film will be produced by Skybound Entertainment’s film team including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst.
In the original Dracula novel, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula. Plot details of the movie weren’t announced, but it’s believed to take place during the present day and is not a period piece.
While Universal is developing a handful of high-profile monster pics including Wolfman starring Ryan Gosling and a Van Helsing pic with James Wan producing, the studio has been high on this project since getting the first draft. While the character isn’t the flashiest among its monster IPs, insiders say the story’s mix of humor and action was something the studio was looking for because so many of the other properties have more of a horror element to them, like Universal’s box office hit The Invisible Man.
Besides The Menu, Hoult next will be seen starring in Season 2 of Tony McNamara’s Golden Globe- and SAG-nominated comedy series The Great, on which he also will serve as an executive producer. Hoult himself received Golden Globe, SAG and Critics Choice acting nominations for Season 1 of the Hulu series, produced by Civic Center Media in affiliation with MRC Television, and following the success of the first season, Hoult signed a first-look deal with MRC Television.
Hoult was most recently seen in Taylor Sheridan’s Those Who Wish Me Dead alongside Angelina Jolie. His feature and TV credits include McNamara’s The Favourite, the X-Men franchise and Mad Max: Fury Road among others.
He is repped by UTA, 42 and Felker Toczek. [Source]
